About Edmonton Movie Club
Edmonton Movie Club (EMC), formed in 2012 with the objective of “bridging cultures through cinema.” In the summer of 2015 EMC started the India Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA), to showcase films made by independent film makers from India and Canada, as well as by the smaller film industries of India. The festival format allowed EMC to bring films from a wider range of languages (ranging from eight to twelve each year) and cultures, and a wider range of subject matter, to bring film directors, actors, and screenwriters to interact with the audience in the form of after screening Q & A sessions, panel discussions, and master classes. In addition, EMC collaborated with local cultural organizations and artistes to present song and dance performances and food festivals. All these ingredients together culminated in a grand celebration of Indian culture. IFFA has been held annually every summer since 2015.
Mission
Edmonton Movie Club (EMC) is a not-for-profit society that was formed with a motto of
– Bridging Cultures through Cinema.
Vision
EMC’s long-term vision is to provide continuous screenings of world cinema to diverse communities of Alberta, including but not limited to Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray.
We will have a special interest in independent cinema.
What We Do
- Promote independent Indian and World cinema in multiple languages to Alberta residents.
- Educate the local community about the existing cultural diversity of India.
- Create educational opportunities through film screenings and workshops.
- Enrich the cultural life in Alberta through screenings of alternate movie content.
- To attract not only to the Indian origin population of Alberta, but all lovers of world cinema.
- To create a platform for local film makers (of Indian origin or makers of India themed movies) to showcase their work.
- To hold an annual film festival (India Film Festival of Alberta).
- To facilitate collaborations between Indian and Canadian filmmakers.
